Mrs. Karen S. Nevins, M.A., All-State Honors ChoirZollie Cole & Walter FloydThe Michigan Youth Arts Festival was brimming with incredible talent May 9-11th at Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo)! This event is noted as the only event of its kind in the United States. In MYAF's 51st year of existence at WMU, following a multitude of competitions, the state's top artists in the areas of fine art, vocal & instrumental music, dance, theater, film making, poetry and so forth are highlighted in one huge festival event at the end of the school year. Parents and students gather to stroll through incredible exhibits and demonstrations and listen to a multitude of fine performances. This year two of Lincoln High School's seniors, Zollie Cole and Walter Floyd, won positions in the All-State Honors choir. They rehearsed from Thursday through Saturday and enjoyed the incredible memorable experience of performing Saturday afternoon under the baton of Internationally known composer and conductor, Z. Randall Stroope in the 2013 MSVMA All-State Honors Choir. Our congratulations to these two LHS seniors! As they graduate from LHS, in the Fall Walter will be attending the University of Virginia and Zollie will be attending Eastern Michigan University. Success at State Solo and Ensemble Festival!Walled Lake Central High SchoolThis year's State Solo and Ensemble Festival produced outstanding scores for Lincoln High School's participants. Perfect performance scores (Superiors) were awarded to large ensembles, Vocal Essence, Men of Lincoln; soloist, Walter Floyd; and Trillium (Bria Woods, Laura Wynne, Walter Floyd). Split Dimensions, Emily Bamrick, and The Treble Tones (Freshmen women) Excellent ratings. As a bonus, Trillium was selected for consideration for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival! Split Dimensions Traveled to Big Rapids!Inter-Generational Women's Choral FestivalSplit Dimensions received cheers and a standing ovation at the ACDA-MI Women's Inter-generational Choral Festival at Big Rapids HS with Michigan's top High School, Community and University Women's Choirs on Saturday 23rd. This event was a huge success and all involved are are eagerly looking forward to an amazing event! Success at District Solo and EnsembleSuperior Ratings for All LHS Events!Congratulations to four large ensembles (Vocal Essence, Split Dimensions, Men of Lincoln, Treble Tones), two soloists (Emily Bamrick and Walter Floyd) and one small ensemble (Lincoln Trillium), who performed at Chelsea High School on Saturday, February 9th. All Lincoln events were levitating after receiving Superior ratings for each event. Judges were full of praise for their showing of fine musicianship, outstanding diction, contrast in dynamics and close attention to detail as each event performed two contrasting pieces of literature. As a result of this District S&E success, all events will work with Mrs. Nevins to develop a plan for the State Solo and Ensemble event, which take place at Walled Lake Central High School in April. All-State Honors Choir Winners!Walter Floyd and Zollie Cole Progress!Walter Floyd and Zollie Cole will begin preparing a new set of literature and will perform in the MSVMA All-State Honors Choir at WMU's Michigan Youth Arts Festival on May 11, 2013 in Kalamazoo, MI. The choir will perform under the direction of nationally known conductor and composer, Z. Randall Stroope. Students have progressed through the 2012-13 Regional, State, and All-State Honors choir program through the support of the LHS Choir Booster Scholarship opportunity. The Michigan Youth Arts Festival is an event that highlights the best distinguished student artists from throughout the state of Michigan. Performances and displays in the fine arts and performing arts will take place in the three-day gala event! The public is invited to this 4:00 pm All-State Honors Choir performance. State Honors Choir Winners!Bria Woods, Walter Floyd, Zollie ColeThese Lincoln HS Students were promoted to State Honors Choirs after Saturday's Region C Honors Choir Performance. All Regional Honors Choir students auditioned throughout the day in contention for positions in three state honors choirs. Bria Woods was promoted to the SSAA(Treble) Honors Choir, Walter Floyd was promoted to the SATB (Mixed) Honors Choir, and Zollie Cole was promoted to the TTBB (Male) Honors Choir! Bravo to these singers for their fine preparation and high achievement! Their performances will take place as the finale concert of the 2013 Michigan Music Conference in DeVos Hall, Grand Rapids, MI on January 19, 2013. Regional Honors Choir Winners!December 1 Performance at Pioneer High SchoolOn October 13th, approximately 500 students visited Lincoln High School to perform their prepared audition for six MSVMA judges. The following Lincoln HS students auditioned and were awarded positions in the 2012 Region C Honors Choir: Emily Bamrick, Bria Woods, Laura Wynne, Walter Floyd, Armand Garnett, Josh Yee-Keathley, Zollie Cole, and Aaron Ward. They are busily preparing additional pieces for their performance at 4:00 pm on December 1st in the Pioneer HS Auditorium. On that day, each Regional singer will be required to perform excerpts from each memorized peace in hope for positions in the State and All-State Honors Choirs. Anyone winning a position in the State Honors Choir will prepare additional music for the State Honors Choir event at the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids, MI. All-State winner will perform a new set of repertoire for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival performance at WMU in May, 2013. University of Toledo HS Honors ChoirMrs. Nevins conducts 180 SingersOn November 2nd and 3rd, Mrs. Nevins and eight Lincoln High School Singers traveled to the University of Toledo for their Fall Honors Choir event. Back in the summer, Dr. Steve Hodge invited Mrs. Nevins to serve as this year's clinician and conductor of the event. She selected the literature that would be performed and she spent the first marking period preparing the honors choir literature with LHS Concert Choir. Each school was permitted to take one or two SATB quartets. LHS singers who qualified to participate were: Alexis Blackburn (Fr), Kendra Glenn (Sr), Courtney Marshall (Sr), Samantha Egolf (Sr), Walter Floyd (Sr), Armand Garnett (Sr), Aaron Ward (Sr), and Josh Yee-Keathley (Sr). Singers rehearsed with one another on Friday night and returned to continue their rehearsal preparation early on Saturday morning. Their concert was performed at 7:00 pm on the University of Toledo Campus. In addition to the HS Honors Choir performance under the direction of Mrs. Nevins, two UT Ensemble provided an amazing performance. Other schools participating were from Monroe County (Michigan) and Northwest Ohio high schools. Carillon Women's Chorale PerformsLHS Alums and Faculty Perform with Carillon Sept 15th!Carillon Women's Chorale was founded in 2001 to perform in Mrs. Nevins' EMU Master Recital with Split Dimensions. Carillon has flourished since then with at least two performances per year since their founding. After preparing throughout the summer, Carillon with Split Dimensions alumns, Sara Apple, Kayla Chapin, and Kerry Sanders will join Mrs. Julie Byrum (MS Accompanist), and Mrs. Mary Bowman (Brick Elem Principal Retiree), Heather Huber (LHS French Sub), Mrs. Toni Micik (MS Choir Director) and Mrs. Karen Nevins. Carillon will collaborate with Measure-for-Measure (Men) and Livingston County Women's Choir (Howell area) with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Arie Lipsky! This gala performance pf professional soloists and choruses will collaborate with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra to open their 2012-13 Season in a rousing performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony as a concert finale. Many know this work by the familiar melody of "Ode To Joy." The entire concert highlights the music of Ludvig von Beethoven with professional soloists. Mrs. Nevins will be conducting auditions on September 20th for Carillon's coming season of Holiday literature. website: http://carillonchorale.com Split Dimensions to perform at ACDA-Michigan ConferenceCentral Michigan University, October 19, 2012Based upon audition recordings Mrs. Nevins submitted following their outstanding 2012 MSVMA festival performances, Split Dimensions was selected by a blind audition process to perform in one of two concert sessions at the Eleventh Annual Fall Conference of the American Choral Director's Association of Michigan. Singers will spend their first weeks of the Fall semester preparing to perform in the Friday Evening Concert with two other choirs. Mrs. Nevins has served on the ACDA-Michigan Board since 1999 and on the Fall Conference committee since the Fall Conference was re-instated in 2001. Mrs. Nevins served as ACDA-MI Secretary for eight years, as newsletter editor for one term and as website manager the past four years. Attending this conference will be School, Church, Community, and Collegiate ACDA-MI members from throughout Michigan. Headliner clinicians for this conference are Dr. Sandra Snow (MSU Women's Glee Club) and V. J. Singh (Jazz Composer). Lincoln High School Choral Program Receives Honor!AA/Y Chamber of Commerce E3 AwardAt the May 7th School Board meeting, representatives from the AA/Y Chamber of Commerce will make a formal announcement to the LCS School Board that Lincoln High School Choirs are being recognized for excellence. Vocal Essence will be there for a brief performance and they will travel to perform in Ann Arbor on May 16th where director, Mrs. Karen Nevins, will receive the award. Mrs. Nevins will provide a Power Point presentation displaying an overview of the program and some of their achievements over the years. Vocal Essence Performs as Distinguished Scholars2012 Michigan Youth Arts FestivalFor their fine performance at their State Solo and Ensemble Festival, Vocal Essence AND Split Dimensions were both selected for consideration to perform! Both MSVMA State Solo and Ensemble Festival performance recordings were sent on to a veteran adjudication committee for a chance to perform in the Michigan Youth Arts Festival and Vocal Essence was selected! For this honor, our 2012 Vocal Essence traveled to Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo). Celebrating its 50th Anniversary the 2012 Michigan Youth Arts Festival was an amazing experience for our students! Performances and exhibits were breathtaking and Lincoln singers were praised for their fine performance! Participants also enjoyed an array of instrumental, theatrical, vocal performances and fine art exhibits over this three-day period. The MSVMA All-State Honors Choir also perform in the finale concert of the 2012 MYAF festival. Four Lincoln singers (Emily Bamrick, Armand Garnett, Dylan Marzolino, and Walter Floyd) earned seats with the best 100 All-State Honors Choir singers from throughout Michigan! Bravo to LHS Singers! SPLIT PERFORMS2012 MICHIGAN MUSIC CONFERENCESplit Dimensions performed an AMAZING concert at the 2012 Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids, MI on January 20, 2012! Mrs. Nevins and the Split singers were inundated with loads of positive feedback following their beautiful performance! Ellen Bonter (Superintendent), John McGehee (Human Resources), and Kimberly Samuelson (School Board President) attended the concert and told Mrs. Nevins they felt very proud of Split's fine performance in representation of Lincoln schools and the Lincoln community! Since we have a master calendar for the first marking period, all non-MSVMA and non-MSBOA events are tentative for the remainder of the year. Once contract negotiations are settled and a master calendar is agreed upon, we will be able to confirm 2nd-4th marking period events, breaks, in-service dates, exams, etc. Students will be asked to utilize this website for 24-hour access to assignments, event notifications & instructions, calendar updates and announcements. Members of the community will find our calendar helpful in planning for their listening pleasure throughout the year!
